Essay on Robert Frost Troubled Romantic - 914 Words

Frost: Troubled Romantic Many authors before Robert Frost wrote through the lens of romanticism. Romantic writers offered their readers an interpretation of nature and the natural order of things as a means to comfort them when faced with lifes difficulties. They proposed that nature could serve as a model, offer direction and allow humans to transcend their human condition. Another school of writers held that humans could not transcend nature or its order, they were the anti transcendentalists. Although they recognized nature as a model for human life, they did not believe humanity could rise above its inherent flaws and predestination for disaster. Frosts work reflects a troubled romantic view of the world. He attempts to†¦show more content†¦Frost will go on to attempt reconciling these differences, giving the neighbor the opportunity to transcend his condition of prickly pine tree. Nature attempts to send the neighbor and Frost the same message, that the wall is unnecessary, every year by making gaps in the wall. There is some force that sends the frozen ground swell under the wall And spills the upper boulders in the sun; / And makes gaps even two abreast can pass (2-5). Every year the ground swells below the wall, knocking the top boulders over. This creates an opening in the wall that Frost and his neighbor can choose to walk through, thus submitting to nature and following it rather than fighting it. Instead they meet to walk the line/ And set the wall between us once again. (13-14). By choosing, year after year, to rebuild the wall they are refusing to submit to natures power over them. They do not embrace its suggestions, and actually do the opposite of what it suggests. Although Frost seems to have failed at reconciling romanticism and anti transcendentalism, he gives him and his neighbor another chance. Admitting to natures power over them is the key to embracing the romantic view of the world, but Frost does not explain why the wall is a futile effort against natural forces. He says that he could say `Elves to him (36) as the culprit for the wall breaking down every year, but he wouldShow MoreRelatedThe Love Song Of J. Homosexuality (526 words) Essay Example For Students

Homosexuality (526 words) Essay HomosexualityHomelessness, condition of people who lack regular legal access to housing. Homelessness has been recognized as a significant social problem in the UnitedStates since the early 1980s, when an increase in the number of homeless peoplewas caused by a weak economy and cuts in federal aid for housing and incomeassistance. Other periods of increased homelessness also have occurred many timesin history, including during the colonial era. Most other industrialized societies alsohave experienced increases in homeless populations in recent decades. The number of homeless people in the United States has been an arguableissue for a while. Advocates for the homeless claim that there are several millionhomeless people; however, recent studies suggest that the homeless number from600,000 to 700,000. Exact numbers are impossible to collect because researchersdefine homelessness in different ways and because the homeless are transitory. Thenumber of people predicted to become homeless in any given year is estimated to bethree to five times the number of people who are homeless at any given moment. The US Census Bureau attempted to count homeless people in the 1990 census. However, most people consider this attempt as a failure. The homeless population is largely made up of adult men, but the number ofwomen, children, and youth has steadily increased. This group now comprises morethan 40 percent of the total homeless population. Most homeless people are alsoextremely poor and separated from their families and other social networks. Aboutone-third of the adult homeless are chronically mentally ill, and about half arealcoholic or abuse drugs. During the 1950s, most homeless people were older, white, alcoholic men associated with the rundown sections of cities known as skid rows. Todays homeless, however, are mostly non-white; relatively young, with an averageage in the middle 30s; and include a large number of women and children. Aboutone-third of homeless men are veterans. In addition to the homeless population, even larger numbers are considered?marginally housed?; they are in danger of becoming homeless because of poverty orunavailable housing. About half the nations poor households spend 70 percent ormore of their monthly income on housing, which puts them at risk of becominghomeless if faced with an economic problem. Because the number of people living inpoverty numbers some 37 million, the marginally housed would amount to nearly 20million people, creating the potential for a vast increase in the size of the homelesspopulation. Those who are housed only because they have been able to stay withfamily or friends are known as the hidden homeless. Many reasons have tried to explain the dramatic increase in the number ofhomeless people in the 1980s and 1990s. The total poverty rate tended to increasethroughout this period, and this was especially true in the inner city areas wheremost homeless people live. At the same time, the supply of low-income housingdeclined in some cities. Waiting lists for public housing are often many years longand increases in welfare payments have not kept pace with inflation. Among otherfactors implicated in the trend are changes in the treatment of the chronicallymentally ill, drug use, the inability of some families to support dependent adultmembers, and an increasing rate of violence against women. Who Am I - Who Do I Like?

Who Am I - Who Do I Like? When we ask ourselves who am I, we ask ourselves who do I like. And so it goes. The question itself is extremely vague. As adults, we sometimes like the way a person looks. We find them attractive, that's why we go to buy goods or services from them. We may think that being with such a person will make us live longer, or make us happy, and therefore it's likely that we'll give them a chance. But sometimes, things are more complex than just liking the person. Someone who is not someone you are looking for, and you don't particularly like, is not necessarily a bad person. We may not like a person for some other reason, but we may also not love them, and therefore we wouldn't want to cause them harm. The first question to ask yourself when thinking about who am I, is, 'Who am I.' What are my values? Are they aligned with your values? If you were to meet a stranger, you'd need to find out about her values, beliefs, and practices. You'd need to know if she would consi der you as her friend, lover, or a colleague, and you would need to know her views on what you were thinking and doing, in order to determine whether she would be compatible with you.At the end of the day, this means that you may not be the kind of person that others want to be around. You may be selfish, uncaring, lazy, or pessimistic. But these are all just a part of who you are. If you could really care less about others, you'd no longer be who you are. When you ask yourself whoam I, you may also ask yourself, 'Who do I like?' What do I like about myself?
